What are rocoto peppers (aji rocoto)?

Rocoto peppers belong to the species Capsicum pubescens and are one of the oldest domesticated chili peppers in the Americas.

How hot are they?

Rocoto peppers are considered to be moderately hot, with a heat range of 30,000-100,000 SHU. They are spicier than peppers like jalapeños and peppers native to the same area of South America, like the aji amarillo.

Tips for growing rocoto peppers

Unlike most peppers, rocotos do not like a lot of heat. They also grow to be large and vining, rather than a compact bush. Make sure your climate is suitable to maintain temperatures between 45°F to 65°F.
