What is pruning?

Pruning involves selectively removing parts of the plant. Different pruning methods serve various purposes, from encouraging bushier growth to enhancing airflow and disease prevention.

Whether pruning actually increases yield remains inconclusive. Some studies show pruning to increase early yield while not affecting total yield, and other studies show it decreasing yield.

"Topping" pepper plants

Topping refers to cutting the top off of a young seedling to encourage it to produce more side shoots. This can help your plant grow sturdier and bushier.

Pinching flower buds before transplanting can help your plant focus on growing a stronger root system. However, it can also delay fruiting by 2-3 weeks so it might not be appropriate if you have a short warm season.

Bottom pruning

Bottom pruning involves removing all branches up to 6-8" above the soil. This improves airflow and reduces splash back when you water your plant or when it rains.

Cons of pruning include that it can delay fruiting in some cases, it may not increase yield like you hope, and it simply takes more work than leaving your plant alone!
