The Sriracha Shortage of 2022: Two alternatives reviewed.

Why is there a Sriracha shortage?

You may have noticed Huy Fong Sriracha disappear off of store shelves in early 2022, never to be heard from again. Rumor has it that crop failure is to blame, with a severe shortage of the necessary chili peppers.

There are a few different generic or off-brand "srirachas" that are easy to find in stores. We tried two of them out. Read on for our reviews!

Tabasco brand Sriracha

I hate traditional Tabasco sauce. It’s one of my least favorite hot sauces ever — it’s just a weird burny vinegar with no redeeming qualities. So my hopes were not particularly high for their Sriracha.

I give Tabasco Sriracha 3/5 stars. It's definitely not real Sriracha. It's VERY sweet, and has less complexity of flavor than Huy Fong Sriracha. It's ok in a pinch if you have a lot of other strong flavors going.

"Food Club" generic Sriracha

"Food Club" is the generic brand my local store carries. It has a flat top rather than the traditional coned top that Huy Fong Sriracha has

Sadly, this version gets only a 1/5 rating. It has a much thinner consistency, and is lighter color. It reminds me of sweet and sour sauce. I probably won't be finishing this bottle.

The verdict:

Honestly, I'm happier paying 5x the cost to buy Sriracha on Amazon rather than using any of the generic or off-brand alternatives. Swipe up to grab your bottles before they're gone completely.
