Review: SmartFood Flamin’ Hot White Cheddar Popcorn

My husband normally does all of the grocery shopping for our household, so when I go to the store, I go a little crazy picking different treats that catch my eye. I was craving white cheddar popcorn this weekend and was thrilled to see they had SmartFood Flamin’ Hot White Cheddar popcorn.

Overall impressions

I give this snack a 9/10 — it’s exactly what you’d expect it to be. Crunchy, slightly cheesy, slightly spicy, and you get the red powdered fingers like you do with Flamin’ Hot Cheetos.

For me, it’s not quite as “addictive” as regular chips, where I might eat an entire bag in one sitting. I was very satisfied having a little bowl with one actual serving size, and didn’t feel like I immediately needed to devour the entire bag.

How spicy is it?

While I might give Flamin’ Hot Cheetos a 6/10 on the spicy scale, this white cheddar popcorn is more like a 4/10. When you eat it you definitely know it’s supposed to be spicy, but it’s still pretty mild by my standards.

It’s probably not something you would want to feed a kid, and at the same time if you’re looking for something to blow your socks off, it’s not going to satisfy the ultra-spicy craving.

Is SmartFood Flamin’ Hot Popcorn healthy?

This is the ingredients list of SmartFood Flamin’ Hot Popcorn provided by the manufacturer: Popcorn, vegetable oil (corn, canola, and/or sunflower oil), maltodextrin (made from corn), buttermilk, cheddar cheese (milk, cheese cultures, salt, enzymes), whey, natural flavors, salt, romano cheese (cow’s milk, cheese cultures, salt, enzymes), potassium chloride, artificial color (red 40 lake, yellow 6 lake, yellow 6, yellow 5), yeast extract, citric acid, lactose, whey protein concentrate, and sodium caseinate.

SmartFood vs. Cheetos Flamin’ Hot Popcorn

SmartFood isn’t the only one with a Flamin’ Hot popcorn; Cheetos has its own version as well. The popcorns are surprisingly similar, with neither one of them being quite as spicy as the original Flamin’ Hot Cheetos chips. Nutrition-wise they are also pretty similar, with the Cheetos brand containing slightly more calories and fat in a similar serving size.

Where to buy SmartFood Flamin’ Hot Popcorn

I bought my Smartfood Flamin’ Hot popcorn at Meijer, my local chain supermarket. You can find them in the chip/snack food section of almost any major store, like Walmart, Target, and Kroger.

There are also online options if you aren’t able to find them in stores (or if, like me, you live somewhere rural, and it’s a pain in the ass to get to the store). You can click this link to find it on Amazon.

However, like with many food items, they are pretty obscenely priced when you shop online. You can also shop Amazon Fresh to get it at a price much closer to the grocery store retail price (if you’re eligible for Amazon Fresh, which I’m not because I live somewhere rural LOL.)
